Importance of Diversity

The variation of life on Earth, its biological diversity is commonly referred to as biodiversity. The Importance of BiodiversityBiodiversity is the amount of variety of life on Earth. It is the number of different species of plants, animals, and microorganisms. Healthy ecosystems and rich biodiversity: Increase ecosystem productivity; each species in an ecosystem has a specific role to play.

The number of species of plants, animals, and microorganisms, the enormous diversity of genes in these species, the different ecosystems on the planet, such as deserts, rain forests and coral reefs are all part of a biologically diverse Earth.

Appropriate conservation and sustainable development strategies attempt to recognize this as being integral to any approach to preserving biodiversity. Almost all cultures have their roots in our biological diversity in some way or form.

A healthy biodiversity provides a number of natural services for everyone:

Ecosystem services:

    • Protection of water resources
    • Soils formation and protection
    • Nutrient storage and recycling
    • Pollution breakdown and absorption
    • Contribution to climate stability
    • Maintenance of ecosystems
    • Recovery from unpredictable events

Biological resources:

    • Food
    • Medicinal resources and pharmaceutical drugs
    • Wood products
    • Ornamental plants
    • Breeding stocks, population reservoirs
    • Future resources
    • Diversity in genes, species and ecosystems

Social benefits:

    • Research, education and monitoring
    • Recreation and tourism
    • Cultural values

Ecological life support— biodiversity provides functioning ecosystems that supply oxygen, clean air and water, pollination of plants, pest control, wastewater treatment and many ecosystem services. Recreation—many recreational pursuits rely on our unique biodiversity, such as bird watching, hiking, camping and fishing.

Biodiversity is extremely important to maintain the ecological system. Most Noteworthy many species of plants and animals are dependent on each other. Therefore if one of them gets extinct, the others will start getting endangered too.

Biodiversity plays a crucial role in human nutrition through its influence on world food production, as it ensures the sustainable productivity of soils and provides the genetic resources for all crops, livestock, and marine species harvested for food.

Biodiversity conservation, the practice of protecting and preserving the wealth and variety of species, habitats, ecosystems, and genetic diversity on the planet, is important for our health, wealth, food, fuel, and services we depend on. Biodiversity conservation is vital for economic growth and poverty reduction.

The higher biodiversity in an ecosystem means that there is a greater variety of genes and species in that ecosystem. A great variety of genes and species means that the ecosystem is better able to carry out natural processes in the face of external stress. Thus, the ecosystem is more sustainable.

Biodiversity boosts ecosystem productivity where each species, no matter how small, all have an important role to play.
